Great game, lots of fun.
Free control is much better, certain earlier levels if you place rooms just below the surface it will cause damage to enemies without reciprocal damage. Also you can place rooms on a diagonal such that if they explode you lose fewer rooms below it. This wouldnt be possible with a grid.
Perhaps future puzzle-like games could have difficulty adjustments. True some levels are hard really quickly, but not impossible- just takes a focused day or two to figure out the strategical trick. I am halfway through the fourth world.
